Actor Tim Allen will serve as grand marshal for this year's Thanksgiving Day parade in Detroit.

The Parade Co. announced Thursday that the metro Detroit native will appear at the 89th America's Thanksgiving Parade, which is presented by Warren-based Art Van Furniture Inc.

Allen is the star of the TV shows "Home Improvement" and "Last Man Standing" and films such as "The Santa Clause" and "Toy Story."

He's also been the voice of the state's Pure Michigan tourism campaign.

"Tim has played a great role in the resurgence of Detroit, not only as an advocate for the state and the city but also through his talent and commitment as the voice of the Pure Michigan campaign," said Tony Michaels, president and CEO of The Parade Co., in a news release. "It is exciting to see one of our own achieve such greatness and we look forward to celebrating with him on Thanksgiving morning."

Organizers of the parade also said Detroit Free Press editorial page editor Stephen Henderson will serve as honorary grand marshal.

This year's parade takes place Nov. 26. The theme is "So Happy Together."
